In Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary [/u]the word HERESY is defined as false doctrine, or teaching which denies one of the foundational beliefs of the church.I don't believe the word was used in the New Testament but Paul did talk of such problems in the The Church at Corinth. Another instance are the ones who denied the diety of Christ in 1John 2:22 who would probably meet the criteria. To extrapolate this in today's church it could be taken as one who teaches a false and/or ficticious doctrine contrary to the scriptures.
