What are your thoughts about having a Christmas tree in the church bldg. Is it good, bad or indifferent? Is there a difference if the tree is put in a room other than the sanctuary?

Yesterday evening we did a traditional "Hanging of the Greens" celebration in our church. A Christmas tree is a part of this and will stay in the rear of the sanctuary for the remainder of the advent season. One of the precursors however is to explain the beginning and use of the Christmas Tree. To that end we keep special bulletins close to the tree so visitors can know why we keep it there and the meaning of the CHRISTMON decorations we use. If anyone would like the text to this this program I think I can supply it. Duke

When we served overseas (Japan), one interesting challenge to the Christians there was the Christmas tree. [BTW, I have no problems with it and our church has one set up as of the first weekend in December until the weekend after Christmas.] However, here was the challenge in some of the national churches: The tree would be set up early enough for all to enjoy the decorations for the approaching holiday. On Dec 26th, all of the Christmas decorations would be taken off and Shinto "decorations" be placed on or around the tree. This was to honor the New Years celebrations heavily woven into Shintoism. The evergreen is a symbol of life in Shintoism; always green, always growing. When I asked the national pastor about this, he was angry that I would bring up something like this. It was insulting to his nationalism.

Burn'em or leave them out of the church.
