Just curious, what is your favorite place in the scripture to preach from in your church? That is outside of special events like holidays and the like. I participated in a survey from a doctoral student on this topic specfically related to O.T. preaching. In my area (Delaware, Maryland, Penn, and New Jersey, most Baptist pastors preferred the O.T. to the N.T. Interesting to say the least.

Strange survey: I thought we were to preach the whole counsel of God. I have to admit I have yet to preach from the Song of Solomon. Guess I'm not smart enough to figure out how to apply it to our lives today, so I leave it for song and hymn writers to find material in it. I have preached from all the rest. I think a lot of preachers like OT because of how clearly it points to all that is in the NT.

Preaching the whole Word is a great honor for mere mortal man! However, most preachers have a favorite book or passage(s) from which they love to preach. I think that is what the survey is about. Didn't mean for it to come across strange.

Sorry, Uth Guy. "Strange" was a bad term. . It was reflective more in the way I felt. I looked at the chart and didn't have a clue how to respond to such a survey. Perhaps people do have favorite books from which to preach. I simply never did. If you had started on the other end of the scale and asked about least favorite books to preach, I'd come up with one (already mentioned) but only because I just never figured out how to do it. In any case, I apologize for my "strange" label.

No problem!! Since you brought it up, let's ask: Pastors, what is your least favorite book or letter from which to preach? I, personally, haven't preached much from Leviticus although I have heard some good sermons in the past from the book.

Uth Guy,
I generally preach from wherever I AM NOT having my daily devotion. If I am in the OT, then I preach from the NT, and vice versa.
However, I do like to preach from Romans and Hebrews. I reckon in order to preach from Hebrews one must be well schooled in OT, i.e. Melchisadec (sp?).
In the least favorite, I do not have one. However, I will say that I have never heard in ALL my Christian experience a message taken from Obadiah.

I must agree that I, too, have yet to preach from Obadiah. I'll have to visit those 21 verses again! ;D

Good Morning everyone,
I thought I would drop a line. In discussing the places in the Bible that we like to preach from, I thought I would pose another question.
Are there any topics that ya'll stay away from? Allow me to clarify. Like I said in a previous post, I have never heard a message taken from Obadiah. I have only heard one message on fasting. I have never heard a message on the gifts of the Holy Spirit while in the SBC. Are these topics taboo within our churches. Are we afraid of what we might be labeled if we teach or preach this?
Just curious and wondering.

I have done sermons on spiritual disciplines such as prayer, facting, meditation (biblical of course), etc... I have also worked with a series on spiritual gifts and the work of the Holy Spirit. Check out Life in the Spirit study done by Robertson McQuilken from Lifeway. It is the third in the trinity series beginning with "Experiencing God", then "The Mind of Christ." I have taught all three to adults as well as youth and they are fantastic. When some say stay away from a topic, I usually will investigate and take on the challenge of teaching it. If we don't, are we not saying we allow our people to live in ignorance of the fullness of the Christian walk? The world isn't going to stay away from their opinions of tough topics, why should the church. ;D I believe we error when we run away.

Brother, To answer this question about staying away from topics I tend to agree with your statements. Imagine how dull and boring the gospel would have been and how Christianity as we know it might never have come about if Jesus had refused to address a problem or confront a situation. I personally believe that ALL questions, problems and world situations are answered in the text of the bible. I know that God called me to preach to bring this to those who are not aware of his word and the power of it. As a Pastor, even if it is a Jail, I believe that God's word is supreme above all and it is my job to search out the passages He has provided in order to answer the questions of those who ask them. I also realize someone may say this is idealistic thinking, but with God as my Ideal then I believe it's OK.

Hello Again Folks, I've been away for a while. But I had to put in two cents for this question. Recently a Sunday School student asked me what the New Testiment preachers used to preach from. Well, I shared the epistles and other Scripture they passed around to each other. Well, I began looking through the OT Books of the law with an eye toward how Jesus would be preached in them by, say Paul or Peter. Ya know Jesus is pretty clear in the Book of Leviticus, and Numbers and even Duteronomy. When I take up the paper chase again for that D.Min I believe I'll write for my disertation "The Gospel according to Leviticus." If you haven't tried this please do. God Bless, Ron
