I have noticed lately that many Southern Baptist churches are using the <AWANA >program. This is of course an Independent youth organization. Why are so many SBC churches going outside the convention for youth programs. Is this good, bad or indifferent?

I had not heard that there was a youth program involved with AWANA. I knew that they went through 6th grade. I have known many SB churches that have used it with great excitement. From looking at some of the materials involved, there is nothing to offset SBC doctrine. It is solid biblical teaching material.

Personally, I have used & like the AWANA program. It's a great tool for reachinmg kids & growing them in the Lord.
However I have a real problem with the SBC mindset that if it isn't SBC it isn't good enough. Ie; when I was in seminary Dr. D. James Kennedy came up with Evangelism Explosion. The SBC then copied it, changed it slightly, and called it CWT - Continual Witness Training. That is petty.
If it's Biblically sound & works, I say use it, regardless of where the program came from.

I am a great fan of AWANA. My daughter was raised in it and I was greatly impressed with the Biblically sound materials. I too have a problem with the mindset of the SBC. But I will go beyond the immediate situation with AWANA. I am personally a little put out with the idea that you must use Lifeway materials because they put so much back into the SBC coffers. I appreciate the fact that they do this and where Lifeway materials are appropriate I will use them. But I have pastored many small churches that could not afford to use Lifeway materials when Lifeway will not take back unused Sunday School materials, yet Standard Publishing will and costs less. I have been criticized for using Standard's materials, but they are less expensive, Biblically sound, and Standard, as I mentioned afore, will take materials back if unused and will even credit you up to the last week of a quarter. Small churches must be frugal and make the best use of what funds they have. I appreciate the SBC and Lifeway, but when a better option is clear, I will do what is best for my church and don't need the criticism of those who think they can afford to be less frugal with the Lord's money.

Awana is a great program to reach kids. It requires many adults to run it completely as designed, but can be adjusted for any church size. It gets alot of people involved and has been one of our best evangelism tools for kids throughout the years.
